Netflix instant streaming disc for the Nintendo Wii!

I’m a big fan of Netflix even though I suck at watching movies. I’ve been on their 3 discs/$18 a month plan since the fall of 2005 and in that time many classic films have languish for months in a pile of mail on my coffee table. My current woefully disregarded at-home flicks are Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, The Illusionist, and Woody Allen’s Alice.

As a long-time customer, I can appreciate all of the upgrades Netflix has made in recent years, most notably the addition of their instant streaming service to membership plans at no additional cost. I’ve had problems in the past with a crappy Internet connection affecting the streaming quality (you suck, Time Warner), but lately the quality has been great on my computer screen.

But even better… a few weeks ago, Netflix finally shipped a disc for the Wii that makes it possible to stream Netflix movies and series directly to my TV instead of my computer. Woo hoo! The Netflix-Wii navigation menu leaves a bit to be desired (there’s no way to search by title, which seems illogical), but nothing beats crashing on the couch and watching marathon runs of Showtime’s Weeds without having to wait for Netflix to ship the next disc. And thank God for instant gratification because otherwise the Weeds cliffhangers would be a killer. That show is CRAZY! Crazy good, that is.

Avatar DIDN’T win the Oscar for Best Picture.

Because of a self-imposed boycott of the 82nd Annual Academy Awards,  I didn’t watch tonight’s ceremony, but I was online when the news broke that The Hurt Locker swept Best Director and Best Picture, leaving the polarizing Avatar in the dust.

My faith in the film industry has now been restored… a little bit, anyway.

The people who have seen Avatar fall into one of two opposing teams. Team Avatar insists the film was the best thing to ever happen to cinema and will defend their masterpiece and Director James Cameron to the death, while Team Dances With Smurfs acknowledges that the visual effects are stunning but the story is nothing more than cliched, poorly written tripe, undeserving of a $500 million budget and a $2.5 billion worldwide gross.

I haven’t seen The Hurt Locker yet so I can’t say whether or not I think the film deserved to win.  Of the 10 nominees, I’ve seen four: Avatar, District 9, Up, and Up in the Air, and of those films, Up in the Air would have been my pick for Best Picture.  The first fifteen minutes of Up were brilliant, but the last hour fell short of Pixar’s earlier Oscar-winning films Wall-E and The Incredibles.

I am curious to see if the Avatar controversy and the Academy’s gimmicky nomination of ten films for Best Picture were enough to entice millions of new viewers to the 3+ hours of awkward, unfunny presenters and pompous ceremony.  From the hundreds of angry rants on the Avatar and Hurt Locker IMDB message boards, one would think that an entire nation had tuned in for the battle between the blue smurfs and the bomb squad.  Well, everyone but me.

Of course the night’s real winner is director Kathryn Bigelow, the first woman in 82 years of Academy history to walk away with the Oscar for Best Director.  In the years to come, may the award always go to the most deserving auteur, regardless of gender.

Pistachios.

Two Happy Things posts in a row could be a sign of lazy blogging (and it is), or it could be a testament to how much I love pistachios (also true).

As a member of Costco, the largest warehouse club chain in the United States, I enjoy buying food stuffs in bulk twice a month.  Last week I bought dry roasted pistachios… 4 LBS of dry roasted pistachios!

They are amazing!

And they will last forever!

Well, they will last two weeks.  That’s good enough for me.

Edit: 1/28/10

I realized that with all my talk about how delicious pistachios are, I forgot to highlight their virtues as a healthy snack.  This omission is now amended!

I present you with the facts about pistachios, straight from the people who harvest, research, and love them. Biased? No, there’s no such thing as a pistachio bias. There is only truth…and love.

Valderi365.com post #100!

I began writing for Valderi365.com on September 10th, 2009, 138 days ago. That would put me just a bit off my goal of 1 post per day… I blame November! And the bitter December that followed! Also, Canada!

According to Matthew Inman’s Blog Verbosity Test, my blog posts are on average 83% shorter than other bloggers (heh heh), so I can’t claim much substance, but I like to think y’all still enjoy reading them.
