There are two kinds of people in this world: the people who keep their heads and take control when faced with an emergency, and the people who fall apart completely. We all like to think that we’re the former, but when confronted with the unexpected most of us will, at best, contribute nothing of value, and at worst, end up on the ground in fetal positions while weeping uncontrollably.
A few years ago I was home from college when my younger brother Chris got his wisdom teeth removed. My mom brought Chris home after the surgery and even after several hours of bed rest, he was still extremely groggy from the anesthesia and his gums were bleeding profusely. My mom led him to the bathroom to clean up some of the blood when Chris’s eyes rolled back in his head and he collapsed to the ground, shaking violently.
My mom was quick to take control of the situation, getting down on the floor to support Chris’s head, and instructing me to call 911. Meanwhile, I panicked and burst into hysterical crying, convinced that my brother was a goner. My nerves were so frazzled I could barely dial the three digit number and I couldn’t speak clearly enough to give the operator our home address. If my mom hadn’t taken over from there, I guess I would still be crying in the bathroom.
After a few hours in the hospital Chris fully recovered from the mild overdose of anesthesia and was fine. I, however, continue to suffer great embarrassment over my complete and utter failure to keep my cool during what turned out to be a relatively minor emergency.
